Description

Kotiyagala Kanishta Vidyalaya (KKV) is a remote school in the Monaragala District. The school provides education for 440 students from year 1 to 11 with 19 teachers.

In 2014 September we visited the school on a fact-finding mission We were appalled to see the difficulties faced by the children and their teachers. The parents of most children were farmers who lived more than 25Km away from Monaragala Town. The dream of every child was to have a good education that would enable them to have a reasonable life and avoid the difficult lifestyle which their parents battle every day.

Stage 01 – Renovation of Science Lab Building

  • Plasterboard had not been laid over foil sheets. This was a serious health hazard as bits of worn out foil and foil dust fell on students and teachers.
  • Unbearable heat due to not having fans and insulation
  • No footpath/paving around the building
  • No electricity
  • Foil dust fell from the ceiling causing health issues to students & teachers

Outcome of the work

  • New ceiling
  • Electricity
  • Fans and lights
  • Paving around the building
  • New cement floor
  • Secure  doors and windows with locks

Stage 02 – Brand new multi-function copier and new Toshiba desktop computer

Not having a copier for printing worksheets and exam papers was a  major issue in the school which had to depend on printing companies in the city. Very poor road conditions from Moneragala Town caused delays in delivery which sometimes resulted in exams having to be postponed.

Outcome of the work

  • Able to print worksheets and exam papers
  • Avoid delays of exam time tables
  • Save a significant amount

Stage 03 – Renovation of Domestic Science Building

This building was in a very dilapidated condition. The worst in the school. The only teacher despite her enthusiasm was unable to   carry out her curriculum without a functional kitchen

The  RIDMA Foundation provided funding to the value of LRK 465,000 to

renovate the building and providing a fully equipped kitchen

Outcome of the work

  • Fully renovated building with electricity and fans
  • Water supply to the kitchen area
  • New plumbing, sinks and tapware
  • Able to conduct lessons and cookery demonstrations for students
